Queen Extravaganza’s musical supervisor, Spike Edney has been Queen’s musical director and live keyboard player since 1984. Spike commenced his 28 year career with Queen when joining them for two world tours, (“The Works” and “Magic”), as well as classic performances at “Live Aid”, “Rock in Rio”, “Live at Wembley” and “Knebworth”. In 1987 Spike co-founded the band The Cross with Queen’s Roger Taylor, which produced 3 albums “Shove It”, “Mad Bad and Dangerous To Know” and “Blue Rock” and in 1992 in addition to being Musical Director for the “Freddie Mercury Memorial Concert”, Spike joined The Brian May Band for the “Back to the Light” tour (the first of two world tours), followed by the “Another World” tour in 1997. Spike resumed his familiar position on the Queen stage for their 2005/2006 “Return Of The Champions” international tour and their 2008 “Cosmos Rocks” European and South American tours with a new line-up, featuring Paul Rodgers on vocals.
In 2000 Spike was appointed MD of the inaugural 46664 concert in Cape Town, which launched Nelson Mandela's initiative in support of HIV/Aids. A stellar line up, featuring Queen performed and subsequent events followed in Tromsö, Norway and Radio City Music Hall, New York, plus an unforgettable 90th birthday party for Mandela in London's Hyde Park.
Of "The Queen Extravaganza" Spikey says "I have had a blast working with this group of extremely talented musicians and singers. We have been able to create a show, which contains a wonderful array of Queen songs that stay faithful to the original versions and spirit of their recordings yet allows a current interpretation of this great canon of work. I'm sure that lovers of Queen's music will be thrilled with the end result. It's been an energising experience for me to assist Roger Taylor and Brian May in bringing "The Queen Extravaganza" to the stage. This is a fantastic show!"
Spike will resume his duties as MD and keyboard player when he joins Queen on stage again for their much anticipated 2012 UK and European summer shows with Adam Lambert.
