April 8th 2014

This event had been booked for some time and we were all excited about bringing the show to Asia!

As often is the case, travel didn’t get off to a good start with Tyler being “bumped” from his flight to Chicago. I was already at London Heathrow but many phone calls and much shouting later Tyler found himself reinstated so he could join the North American party on their flight to Hong Kong.

I flew with the band’s newest member from London. Nick Radcliffe has stepped in to cover for Brian Gresh whilst he is on Paternity leave.

Our Artist Liaison Sandra, who looked after us for the whole of our stay, met us at Hong Kong airport.

Next day we had rehearsals. Our set list for this show was only 30 minutes long but had to be precise because of TV schedules.

The event for our show was the Hong Kong Rugby 7s tournament, which is held every year at The 40,000 seater Hong Kong Stadium.

Our sound check was due the next day. Before this could happen I was at the stadium talking through the logistics with the event’s Production Manager, Scott MacLean. The plan was for us to perform on a roll out stage, because of the width of the tunnel the stage had to be made in six parts and would then be rolled out and then bolted together on the pitch. For the pushing on the various parts of the stage we had none other than the People’s Liberation Army! Under the guidance of their Chief, aptly named Rambo!

The sound check was not without its problems, but all got done and dusted in beautiful weather touching 30oC.

Show day came and we awoke to monsoon type weather. We arrived at the stadium and we driven straight to our dressing rooms, which incidentally were next door to the players dope testing rooms! Very rock and roll!

The rain was so heavy that play was suspended because of lightning and many meetings ensued between the organisers and myself. We had all the latest hi-tech weather reports… all of which confirmed it were raining! And would be for some time!

The marching band parade was cancelled.

It was not looking like we were going to get to perform!

The stadium PA blew because of the weather and up until 2pm we had no way of performing. We were due to take to the stage at 2.32pm precisely.

Then the Rugby Gods shined down. The rain stopped. The pitch was so waterlogged our stage which was designed to be rolled, would now not roll because of the mud. The People’s Liberation Army came into their own. They lifted it up onto the pitch!

The PA was fixed with 15 minutes to go and The Queen Extravaganza played their 30 minute set on time and with no rain! Nothing short of a miracle!

Predictably, The 40,000 crowd went wild for the band.

Their set list was:

The band was oblivious to the entire goings on beforehand, as it should be.

They played a blinding set and celebrated afterwards.

The crew, both Hong Kongese and English, and myself just breathed a sigh of relief!

The QUEX Hit Hong Kong!
March 27th 2014

The QUEX are currently in Hong Kong as they prepare to perform at the HK Sevens Rugby Tournament as the part of entertainment line up at the event. The picture above, taken by Tour Manager Paul Bond, sees the guys soundcheck in the stadium.

The Queen Extravaganza will perform on Saturday afternoon following the renowned Hong Kong Sevens March Past when the massed pipes and drums of the Hong Kong Police, Auxiliary Police, and Scout Pipe Bands will lead out the 28 participating national teams and members of Hong Kong's 20 mini rugby clubs in the traditional pitch parade.
