Notes From The Road #3
September 6th 2013

CANADA

It has been a few weeks since Notes from the Road #2! We have just finished a month in the beautiful city of Quebec City, which means in 2013 we have played 25 shows there - quite incredible!

For those who haven’t been lucky enough to visit, Quebec City is stunning with very friendly people who not only welcomed us every night on stage with rapturous applause and endless standing ovations, but greeted us all in the streets and bars when we were out enjoying ourselves post shows.

So, it was with heavy hearts we rolled out of town on Monday night for an overnight journey of 7 hours to Ottawa. We travel in two tour buses and one 53 foot truck and trailer with a total touring team of 6 band members together with myself and 8 crew.

We played The Canadian Tire Center Arena in Ottawa, which until recently was known as Scotiabank Place Arena. Ottawa, the capital of Canada and the country’s fourth largest city has always been good to us. We played there in January and sold out the National Arts Centre, hence why this time we got to play the arena! We all love arenas.

Our show is designed for any place, but it works so well in arenas! We are able to spread out our set, bring in extra lights and make the show even more impressive than it already is. For those who came to see us in Ottawa or The Bell Centre in Montreal in January, I am sure they will agree. Ottawa has a reputation for being a reluctant audience. Not in our experience.... the audience on Tuesday were on their feet by the second song and remained there for the whole show. It was quite incredible, not only did the band put on one of their best performances the audience also played a huge part in the whole experience. It was one of those times where the promoter and I were standing at the side of the stage with goosebumps. It was emotional!

Arenas take a lot of work before-hand to put together on the technical side, they are also very involved on the day, but it is days like these who for those of us that support the role of the artists live for.

On leaving Ottawa, we had a monster journey of 19 hours to Halifax. It was so long we had to take two days to do it because the drivers need sleep.... and I’d prefer them to do that in a nice hotel and get us safely there, so we split the journey into a 10 hour drive to Edmunston in New Brunswick, where we stayed for the day before commencing the final part of the journey to Halifax 12 hours later.

We rolled into Halifax very early today. We have never played a show here without selling out! Tonight was no exception, every seat in the house sold and a huge queue and the signing desk after the show, where it seemed everyone waited patiently to get their Queen Extravaganza t-shirts signed. Our Tour Buses will roll this morning at 1am when we head for Moncton and our last show in Canada this time round before heading to the United States.

Canada, has always been so kind to us, selling out wherever we go with great, knowledgable audiences who know their Queen music.

It’s been a blast Canada. Until the next time!
